Architectural Features as Focal Points

Look around the room to determine the “biggest” feature.
A fireplace, picture window, book case, or etc..
What is the feature that stands out most as you enter the room?
If you have chosen a mantle or bookshelf as your focal point use plants or accessories to decorate them.

Things to keep in mind when working on a focal point

Your focal point should be the first thing you see when you walk into a room
Arrange your furniture around the focal point whenever possible
Use lighting to enhance your focal point. You can use a picture light or track lighting to highlight a picture or piece of artwork.
Use contrasting colors to make the focal point stand out. If you have a dark frame or piece of furniture use a light wall color behind it or vice versa.
